The Post Office STAMP OUT HUNGER Food Drive is an annual national event.
It’s held on Saturday, MAY 13, and is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers.
People throughout the country – including here in western Massachusetts – are invited to join this national food drive. Here’s how you can participate:
- Put a bag or box of nonperishable (canned) unexpired food by your mailbox by 9AM on Saturday morning, May 13 (no glass, homemade products, or opened food please.)
- Letter carriers pick up your food donations and distribute food to food pantries in their area. The Amherst Survival Center’s Food Pantry is one of several appreciative recipients of food donations collected from Amherst and surrounding towns.
At the Amherst Survival Center, the Post Office Food Drive is our biggest single day food drive, helping to supply our Food Pantry for the busy summer ahead.
This year, with your help, we hope to collect 7,000 pounds on Saturday, May 13.
HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE FOOD DRIVE:
PARTICIPATE: Click here for a list of our most needed foods. Click here for a shopping list for the Post Office Food Drive, you can download it and use it to buy food and personal care items in need for the Center’s Food Pantry.
DONATE: Fill a grocery bag (or two, plastic if it’s raining!) with healthy, non-perishable unexpired food and set it by your mailbox the morning of Saturday, May 13 (by 9AM). Please no glass or homemade products. And yes, we also accept donations of personal care items. Your letter carrier will pick it up.
VOLUNTEER: On Saturday, May 13th, and the following Monday, May 15th, we need volunteers to help lift, carry and unload boxes; and sort and stock food donations. While the Post Office does an amazing job of collecting all these nutritious donations, it’s up to us to organize and store it for our Food Pantry and our neighbors.
Volunteer shifts are about 2 hours (Saturday 2:30PM-4:30PM, 4:30PM-6:30PM). If you’re interested in volunteering to help the Center process the food donations, contact Carleen Basler, our volunteer coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 549-3968 ext. 111. Families are welcome. You can also sign up for specific shifts, by clicking here.
