Together we can re-imagine how our community provides basic assistance to our neighbors in need.
With your support, we can improve the efficiency and dignity with which we feed, clothe, and provide health care and counseling to thousands of people in Amherst and the surrounding towns.
These challenging economic times have swollen the numbers of individuals and families in need of the essentials of life. Since 2007, the Amherst Survival Center has seen an already growing demand soar by 56%. In 2011 we opened our door to 500 new faces — women, men and children who found themselves hungry. Last year we served over 11,000 hot lunches and gave 130 tons of groceries and fresh food.
The Amherst Survival Center has worked diligently to keep pace, but today we find our basement home stretched beyond capacity, with no space for expansion.
The Amherst Survival Center Capital Campaign will enable us to construct a new building which doubles our current quarters, providing 6,000 square feet to house a dedicated health clinic, private counseling spaces, efficient delivery and food sorting areas, adequate group gathering space, an entrance dedicated to clothing donations, and parking for clients and donors. The building will aim for maximum resource efficiencies within LEED and Green Globes guidelines.
To create this new home the Amherst Survival Center is working to raise $2,500,000. By January of 2012 we’d raised more than 80% of that goal. We invite you to join us in this once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a center which reflects and respects the dignity of the people we serve and the compassion of our community.
